A Career as a Storage Engineer

A Storage Engineer is responsible for facilitating and leading the engineering process for data storage in their organisation. They work in a team environment to design, deploy, and monitor storage, backup and storage area network systems. They actively participate in technical meetings to suggest new ways in which to provide storage with backup options, secured access, and more efficiency. Storage Engineers also assist with maintenance tasks and backup activities to protect data integrity from corrupted information and data theft.

To be a great Storage Engineer you will need to have strong problem-solving skills, outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, strong organisational skills and ability to multi-task. It is also important to have the ability to see issues through to successful resolution and to have the ability to work in a collaborative, fast paced environment.

There are a number of different types of Storage Engineers including:

  • IT Architects,
  • Solutions Architects,
  • Systems Administrators and
  • Systems Engineers.

A career as a Storage Engineer opens the door to a number of different roles including becoming a Senior Storage Engineer, an IT Manager, a Senior Systems Administrator, a Senior Systems Engineer or a SAN Systems Administrator.

In order to become a Storage Engineer you will need a Degree in Network Engineering, a Degree in Computer Systems, a Degree in Information Technology, a Degree in Storage Analysis, a CCNA Certification or a CCNP Certification.

Skills required include:

  • Knowledge of TCP/IP. VLAN, LAN switching, FC, iSCSI, DNS, DHCP, Citrix Netscaler, Cisco ASR Routing, Cisco Nexus Switching, HTTP and SSL
  • Designing and implementing solutions for data storage and maintenance.
  • Upgrading software, applying patches, and ensuring the physical security of data.
  • Evaluating input and output for systems, as well as overall architecture, to be able to recommend improvements.
  • Designing disaster recovery plans and enforcing backup and archival procedures.
