A Career as a Web Designer

A Web Designer is responsible for creating the design and layout of a website or web pages. This can mean working on a brand new website or updating an already existing site. Upon meeting with clients and assessing their needs, Web Designers help to create and maintain the products they have created based on each client’s specific requests.

Web Designers spend most of their time on the styling and layout of pages with content, including text and images. They use many technologies but commonly rely on hypertext and hypermedia resources including HTML, CSS and additional Web design tools. A successful Web Designer will have great communication and problem solving skills and strive to find the perfect balance between creativity and handling complex technical requirements.

In order to become a Web Designer you will require one or more of the following qualifications – a BS Human-Computer Interaction, a BS Visual Arts, a Diploma in Web Design, a Diploma in Web Development or a Diploma in Graphic Design.

Skills required include:

  • Knowledge of HTML, HTML5, CSS, Adobe InDesign, WordPress, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and JavaScript.
  • Executing all visual design stages – from concept to final hand-off to engineering.
  • Conceptualizing original website design ideas that bring simplicity and user friendliness to complex roadblocks.
  • Creating wireframes, storyboards, user flows, process flows and sitemaps to communicate interaction and design ideas.
  • Presenting and defending designs and key deliverables to peers and executive level stakeholders.
  • Establishing and promoting design guidelines, best practices and standards.
